노을 맛집, BTS 성지… ‘완전한 고을’의 가을길 완주! [ESC] : ESC : 특화섹션 : 뉴스 : 한겨레모바일 (hani.co.kr)
Wanju means perfect village. It is located in the center of northern Jeollabuk do and surrounds Jeonju. It is adjacent to 7 cities and counties including Jinan-gun, Gimje-si, and Iksan-si. It is like a road connecting various regions, and the harmonious scenery of mountains and rivers is outstanding. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides and the Mangyeong River flows through the Honam Plain.
Wanju is also called 'the holy land of BTS'. In 2019, word of mouth spread as the place where BTS filmed the music video and pictorial for ‘BTS 2019 Summer Package in Korea’, and as well as the BTS fan club ‘Army’, regular tourists have continued to visit. There is even a BTS pilgrimage course to visit Oseong Hanok Village and Wibongsanseong Fortress.
n Wanju, where there are many places to visit, such as mountains, rivers, and the holy land of BTS, there are various courses suitable for walking in autumn. A walking tour is a way to complete a complete race. On the 1st, we headed to Balwonsaem (Bamsaem) in Dongsang-myeon, the starting point of Mangyeonggang-gil, one of the walking courses. Clear water flows from a small spring with stones piled up at the entrance. This water flows through Gosan-myeon, Bongdong-eup, and Samrye-eup, and passes through the neighboring cities and counties Iksan, Gimje, and Gunsan to the West Sea. Mangyeonggang-gil is a road made along the waterway. It is about 52km from Balwonsaem in Dongsang-myeon to Haejeon Village in Samrye-eup, and there are a total of 7 courses. Course 1 Bamsaem-gil (Dongsang-myeon Bamti Village - Bamsaem), Course 2 Gupit-gil (Bamti Village - Geoin Village), Course 3 Changpo-gil (Changpo Village - Gosan-myeon Sesimjeong), Course 4 Sesimjeong-gil (Sesimjeong-Bongdong-eup Sangsanggi Park), 5 Course Ginger-gil (Sangjanggi Park ~ Bongdong Bridge ~ Hoepo Bridge), Course 6 Shincheon Wetland Road (Hoepo Bridge ~ Harigyo ~ Samnye Bridge ~ Bibijeong), Course 7 leads to Bibijeong Road (Bibijeong ~ Haejeon Village).
If you walk along the Mangyeonggang-gil, you can see Wanju in every corner. Course 6 is good for eco-tourism, as there is the Sincheon Wetland, which is called the “lungs of the Mangyeong River.” About 300 species of aquatic plants, such as yellow-billed lotus and prickly pear, live here, as well as 10 endangered species, including spoonbill and otter.
Course 7 is a good course to walk in autumn. This course runs from Bibijeong Pavilion, which means geese resting, to Haejeon Village in Samrye-eup, and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes round trip on foot. If you climb to Bibijeong Pavilion on the hillside of Mangyeong River, the starting point of Course 7, you will see the old Mangyeong Steel Bridge (National Registered Cultural Property No. 579). It was made during the Japanese colonial period, and the Japanese used it as a way to exploit rice harvested in the granary of the Honam Plain. In 2011, the bridge was closed due to the construction of a new bridge due to the Jeolla Line double track project. Currently, a non-fixed art train (cafe and complex cultural shelter) made by renovating 4 abandoned Saemaeul trains is operating in some sections of the abandoned railway bridge. In particular, if you visit Bibijeong at sunset, you can enjoy the Mangyeong River and the beautiful sunset in an unobstructed view. It is even more special because you can see the sunset in the sky and the sunset reflected in the river at the same time.
Oseong Hanok Village in Soyang-myeon, where old-fashioned hanoks are gathered, is a good place to walk slowly and contemplate. Ohseong means a good land where five saints are born, and it has been famous as a place of feng shui since ancient times. Jongnamsan Mountain and Wibongsan Mountain surround it like a folding screen, and there are about 20 traditional hanok houses, including old hanok houses, as well as small galleries and cafes using old hanok houses. Awon's old house, where BTS stayed, is also located here.
In Oseong Hanok Village, located at the foot of a steep mountain, it is fun to look around the low earthen walls and old hanoks. If you look closely at the traditional style of the old house, such as deulchang, wide daecheongmaru, and gray tiles, you can feel the beauty of the structure and architecture of the hanok. The historical story of a hanok that harmonizes with nature and forms a landscape is also interesting. Soyang Old House, where you can stay in a hanok, was built by relocating three traditional hanok houses in the Honam area that were in danger of being demolished. The main house of Soyang Old House is a date-style hanok relocated from Wonho-ri, Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do. It was the residence of Wonnim, the last Goeul of Muan during the Joseon Dynasty. It is said that it was used as a study room for students during the Japanese colonial period. Awon Old House near Soyang Old House is a hanok built from a 250-year-old house in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do. It is operated as a space such as a hanok stay and a museum.
The Gosan Natural Recreational Forest, one of the best places to visit for autumn leaves, is also a must-visit destination for autumn. Located at the foot of Mt. Ansusan, it is a relaxing resort surrounded by mountains. There are facilities such as the Mugunghwa Theme Botanical Garden where 180 species of Mugunghwa are planted, and the Mangyeonggang Aquatic Life Science Museum where you can observe fish and aquatic insects. There are many quiet walking trails throughout the resort. In particular, at the top of the recreation forest, there is the Gosan Reservoir Dulle-gil (4km), which is especially good for walking in autumn because there are many maple trees.
In autumn, the Alpine Recreational Forest turns into a festival site. Wanju's representative festival, Wanju Wild & Local Food Festival, will be held for three days from the 30th to the 2nd of October. Various programs such as local food contest using special products of Wanju such as ginger, youth Gwangki Festival, grilled local food tasting, and local food show with chefs Oh Se-deuk and Cheon Sang-hyeon will be presented. On October 1st, <Korea Broadcasting 1> (KBS1)'s 'National Singing Contest' finals recording will be held.
If you want to travel around Wanju using public transportation, the city tour bus in Wanju-gun is worthwhile. Wanju-gun operates an autumn city tour bus centered on BTS photo shoot locations every Saturday until November 19th. The city tour bus departs from Iksan Station at 9:20 am, tours Samrye Culture and Arts Village, Wibongsanseong Fortress, and Oseong Hanok Village in Soyang-myeon, and returns to Iksan Station at 6 pm. If you make a reservation for a tour, KORAIL train users can receive a 5-10% discount on train fares, and the tour cost is 3,000 won (adult fare). A cultural tourism commentator introduces the history and culture of the region in all courses. Applications for participation can be made on the website of the Wanju-gun Tourism Marketing Support Center or the KORAIL website.
